Warning for travelers to Hungary - Parking ain't easy. I'm not talking about finding the parking spot. We actually found that less of a problem. Bigger problem is paying for it. There are a lot of automatic parking money taking machines, but most of them accept only Hungarian Forints in coins, some of them accept paper money as well, few take Hungarian issued credit cards, but none accepts regular world-wide accepted plastic. Remedy for this is fairly simple: Have a lot of Hungarian coins. Hungary is in the European Union but Forint is the official money, not Euro.
Other, not so easy remediable problem is the 'Hungarian Trap'. Let's say you parked, like we did, on the parking where weekends are free. You come back to the car to find the parking ticket on the windshield. WTF? Now you have following choices:
1. Ignore it and you'll either have troubles getting out of the country, or getting in next time.
2. Pay. Question is when. Only place you can pay it is at the post office which is not working right now. Extend your trip to Monday, or ask a friend to pay on Monday hoping they won't give you troubles on exit.
3. Complain. Good but you have to pay the ticket first and complain later. In person. In Hungary. Do you still want to contend it?
OF course, this never happens to cars with Hungarian license plates. Only bloody foreigners that can't fight back. Is it crooked system? Sure it is, but what can you do?
